Jake and Elwood Blues make their stage debut at the Lone Star in New York City

DAN AYKROYD:

That first appearance we were pretty scared. I just played tiny, nothing little harp bits and danced around while John sang “Flip, Flop & Fly” and a couple of other songs. We were worried, but Willie Nelson backed us up. Doing easy material with a band like that behind us, we ended up coming off pretty good.

JUDITH BELUSHI PISANO:

One night we were at this club called Trax. Lorne Michaels was there. John got up with the band and sang a few songs, and Lorne said, “Why don’t you warm up the show with the band on Saturday night?” So John and Dan started warming up the audience and did pretty well for a couple of weeks. Then Lorne asked them to perform on the show.

For that first SNL appearance, Jake and Elwood didn’t have their own band yet, so they performed with some of the Saturday Night musicians. They were billed as the musical guests for the show, which was an important distinction. They fought for that position because, had they allowed the characters to be used in a skit, by contract they would have become the property of NBC. From both a legal and a personal standpoint, it was imperative for John and Danny to keep control of Jake and Elwood.
